Power of Attorney
What is a Power of Attorney?
A Power of Attorney is a legal agreement you make that
gives another person or organisation the right to act on your behalf.
The document clearly sets out the limits of this power, so you can
authorise them to do as much or as little as you wish.
The Power of Attorney is a good way to have a responsible
person or trusted organisation handle all or some of your affairs
when the need arises.
How does a Power of Attorney work for you?
A Power of Attorney can lie ‘dormant’ for
years if need be, but importantly it is there and ready to be used
when required.
If you were unexpectantly prevented from attending
to your financial matters through illness, absence or simply because
you prefer not to manage your affairs, imagine the problems that could
arise.
Are there alternatives to a Power of Attorney?
Yes, should you no longer be able to manage your own
affairs, an application can be made to the Guardianship
and Administration Board for the appointment of an Administrator to make financial decisions on your behalf. This can be a
timely process that does not allow you to be fully involved in the choice of an appropriate person or organisation.
Can an Attorney change my Will?
No. An Attorney cannot change your Will.
